Reptiles of Sydney Harbour

Marine turtles

Three species of marine turtles are recorded from the Sydney Harbour region with certainty. These are the Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, Loggerhead Turtle, Caretta caretta, and Leatherback or Luth Turtle, Dermochelys coriacea. The Green and Loggerhead Turtles are widely distributed in the tropical and warm waters of northern Australia and there is no evidence that either species breeds in New South Wales waters. As such, the status of these species in Sydney Harbour can be regarded as vagrants or strays to the area. The Leatherback Turtle is known from a broad area of the east Australian coastline and is frequently sighted in temperate waters indicating this species actively uses these waters as feeding grounds. There are occasional records of nests from some beaches in the far north of New South Wales.
