Reptiles of Sydney Harbour

Goannas, Family Varanidae

The Lace Monitor, Varanus varius and Heath Monitor, Varanus rosenbergi were the two largest lizard species (1.5 m and 2.0 m total length respectively) to occur in habitats along and adjacent to the harbour foreshores. Both are wide-ranging species and it is doubtful if viable populations of either species still occur in the area, other than as isolated long-lived individuals. The Heath Monitor is currently listed as a threatened species in New South Wales.
