Several species of dragon lizards once occurred in woodland or heathland habitats along the harbour. Most of these have not adapted to intensive urban development and are now restricted to remnant areas of relatively undisturbed bushland or reserves, one of these, the Bearded Dragon, Pogona barbata, is now uncommon in the area. Only one, the Eastern Water Dragon, Physignathus lesueurii, still occurs commonly in the area. This large lizard species lives mainly along waterways and has adapted to a range of environments from the harbour foreshores to northern suburb gardens next to creeks.
