Who we are

Taronga Zoo is one of Australia's leading zoos with an international reputation for excellence in the fields of conservation, environmental education and care of wildlife.

Opened in 1916, the Zoo's 28 hectares is home to more than 2000 animals - the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New South Wales.

What we do

We participate in global partnerships, regional recovery programs and research endeavours with breeding programs for a range of native and exotic species such as the Black Rhinoceros, Fijian Crested Iguana and the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat.

The Zoo provides a comprehensive program of environmental education to the community sharing our message with more than 1.2 million visitors each year.

Taronga Zoo aims to promote positive conservation outcomes by inspiring exploration and discovery, and creating understanding and wonderment of our natural world.

About us and Sydney Harbour

Taronga Zoo seeks to maintain and protect Sydney Harbour's natural environment through research, native animal rehabilitation and collaborative projects with other agencies.

Taronga Zoo is celebrating its prominent location and long association with the Harbour through the Australian Coastline project. This project will showcase marine habitats and communicate the Zoo's and individual's responsibility for the conservation and protection of Australia's marine environment.

Through the Living Harbour project we aim to promote the protection and conservation of Sydney's harbour foreshores and wildlife.

Projects

  • NRMA Wildlife Clinic
  • Australian Marine Mammal Research Centre (AMMRC)
  • Australian Shark Attack File
  • Harbour Foreshore Regeneration
  • Little Penguin Recovery Plan (PDF)
The Little Penguin Recovery Plan documents the actions required to ensure the ongoing management of the Little Penguin colony at North Sydney Harbour. Under this plan Taronga Zoo provides community education and advice as well as scientific and veterinary assistance in the management of the Little Penguin population.
  • Oiled Wildlife Response and Rescue
Taronga Zoo provides an Australia-wide service to respond to wildlife during and/or after an oil spill. Staff at Taronga Zoo specialise in the treatment, rehabilitation and release of oiled wildlife. Staff were actively involved in the response to the light crude oil spill from the tanker Laura D'mato in Sydney Harbour in 1999.
