Who we are
The Harbour Trust is a Commmonwealth Government organisation that manages seven lands around Sydney Harbour.
- North Head Artillery School
- former Defence lands at Middle Head, Georges Heights and Chowder Bay in Mosman
- Woolwich Dock and Parklands
- Cockatoo Island
- Snapper Island
- Macquarie Lightstation
- the former Marine Biological Station at Watsons Bay
What we do
We are preparing a plan that will rehabilitate these lands and return them to public ownership. The lands have been vacated by the military and other maritime and industrial agencies. The Harbour Trust is determining how the lands will be used and managed in the future.
Our work is currently focused on planning and community consultation, although we are undertaking maintenance to restore heritage buildings and structures, improve native bushland and provide safe public access. The lands are gradually being opened-up through walking tracks, guided tours, open days and education programs.
The plan for the lands is expected to be completed by mid 2003 and then implemented over a period of about 10 years.

About us and Sydney Harbour
The lands we manage reflect the development of Sydney in relation to her harbour. They incorporate significant areas of natural vegetation; aged buildings with significant histories; unique infrastructure in prized locations; remarkable places from which Sydney can be viewed and appreciated; areas of strategic importance to the city's defence and growth.
The Harbour Trust is working to create something truly special for these lands - to enhance the harbour and leave a lasting legacy for Sydney.
We will ensure Aboriginal, maritime and defence heritage on Sydney Harbour is conserved and interpreted, and public access to our lands is maximised. Buildings and facilities will be adaptively reused and unique places for tourism, recreation and enjoyment will be created.
