Who we are
The Australian Museum is a leader in natural science and cultural research, community programs and exhibitions. Established in 1827, we are Australia's first museum and have extensive collections of natural science specimens and indigenous cultural material from Australia and the Pacific region.
What we do
We research, interpret, communicate and apply understanding of the environments and cultures of the Australian region to increase their long-term sustainability.
Our work focuses on sustainable environments and cultures for future generations, achieved through documenting and understanding the past and present.

About us and Sydney Harbour
The Australian Museum first opened its doors in Sydney 1830. Since then, it has played a major role in collecting, researching and communicating the natural and cultural heritage of Sydney Harbour.
Through the Living Harbour project we aim to promote the natural and cultural resources of the harbour. We recognise its central place in the history, present and future of the people who live in Sydney and those who visit it.
