Few frog species have received the level of public attention that the Green and Golden Bell Frog has generated in the past five years. This large and attractive frog was once common in wetland areas over much of the south-east Australian coast and highlands, but appears to have undergone a marked decline in abundance and distribution. For this reason it was listed as 'Endangered' under the New South Wales Threatened Species Act. However, despite its apparent decline the frog still persisted in at a number of sites within the Sydney metropolitan area, in particular disused and highly disturbed areas that offered the basic requirements for the frog to exist. As a consequence there have been attempts to accommodate the presence of this endangered species at a number of development sites in the Sydney region, most notably the site of the 2000 Olympic Games at Homebush Bay. The success of the measures directed towards conservation of the species in the Sydney region will only be clear in the years to come.
